Helping Haiti

10 February 2010

This term Grade 4 Southbank Hampstead students have been studying the Unit of Inquiry "How We Express Ourselves" with lines of inquiry exploring devices used to manipulate perceptions; how mass media can influence our choices; and how we interpret the media.

It was at the commencement of this unit that the tragic Haiti earthquake struck and, as a result, our Grade 4 teachers combined heart and head and with their students, organised a Haiti Bake Sale fundraiser.

The children researched for the bake sale, recognising the roles of the mass media and advertising. They informed themselves about fundraising and the power of emotion when appealing for funds.

They created a buzz of excitement and anticipation as they planned the sale, they manned the stall themselves, demonstrating their time management skills, aided and supported by many Grade 4 parents who we are also very thankful too.

Principal, Helen O'Donoghue, said: "They learnt well, co-operated effectively and should feel enormously proud of their learning achievements through this Unit, as well as the fact that they raised over £700! Well done and thanks to all who supported this event."

A special mention goes to Ryan Yoshida's father who bought a cake from school and returned to his office to auction it, raising over £150 for the Haiti cause. Again, great action in the community!
