Janet Kuehn Memorial Travel Fellowship Award
This award was established in memory of Janet Kuehn, a much-loved teacher who had been with Southbank from its foundation. She died in October 1998 following a courageous battle against cancer. The Janet Kuehn Memorial Award is a travel fellowship that is presented annually to a Southbank student who demonstrates qualities that were admired in Janet:
• Courage and strength as an individual
• Warmth and sensitivity
• Generosity
• High academic and personal standards
• Commitment to improving understanding among people.
Nominees who are considered by the committee to fulfil the criteria for this award, are invited to submit and present educational travel proposals. The committee considers the proposals and the successful candidate is awarded a travel scholarship of £1500. Recent proposals have included:
- Assisting doctors in Sivakasi, India, learning about children's health
- Volunteering and studying at the Institute for Candadian Citizenship, to explore what it is to be Canadian
- Working with a charity called Dramatic Need in South Africa, conducting workshops in schools, teaching art, drama and music
- Working on a UN programme in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, looking at how to improve the standard of living for a community
- Learning to play the Shamisen, a traditional three-stringed instrument, in Kyoto, Japan
- Working in the Amazon rainforest, on a project of reforestation
- Working with a non-profit non-governmental organisation, Women in Progress, in Krobo and Cape Coast in Ghana, photographing and collecting stories of the women.
Jack O'Connor won in 2010 with a plan to go dog sledding in the Arctic Circle. Lucien Begault and Mohammad Al Bader won jointly in 2011. Lucien has travelled by bus around Europe discovering what it means to be European and Mo will travel to Timbuktu at Christmas to look at ancient Arabic manuscripts.
ECIS Student Award for International Understanding
Each year members of the faculty nominate a Grade 12 Southbank student to receive this award given under the auspices of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). This honour is presented on Graduation Day to the student who best exemplifies the principles and ideals of international understanding.
Milton Toubkin Community & Service Award
The Milton Toubkin Award for Making a Difference is presented annually to a student or group of students whose activities have demonstrated a genuine sense of service to others, resulting in action that has “made a difference”. The recipient(s) of the award may assign the sum of £200 to a good cause of their choice.
