Discovery Week
Early in the School year students in Grades 6-11, accompanied by their advisors and other teachers, leave London for the Autumn Discovery Week. The locations chosen are age appropriate and students and staff participate in challenging activities under the supervision of specialist instructors. The emphasis throughout the time they are away is on the development of skills in teamwork, co-operation, initiative, leadership and problem-solving. There is a second Discovery Week in June for students in Grades 6-9. The programme will be centred on cross-curricular MYP themes and projects. This will involve day trips, collaborative units of work and other specific activities.
Town Meetings
These are meetings of staff and students. A Town Meeting affords an opportunity for announcements, appeals, special assemblies, discussions, debates, guest speakers, and so on. It is an excellent way for students to learn about the work of individuals and organisations in London.
International Evening
Organised by the PTA, this is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our community and includes typical dishes from each student’s country. Whatever difficulties exist between countries in the outside world these are not allowed to influence the spirit of friendship that exists within our School community!
Graduation Day
This is the day when a ceremony is held to honour the graduating students and to present the High School and Honours Diplomas and the special awards. For many years this event has been held on a Saturday morning in Term 3 at Church House, Westminster Abbey. All Southbank students, families and staff are encouraged to attend this event.
The High School Prom
The High School Prom is the major social event of the year, and is held on the evening of Graduation Day in Term 3 at an outside venue - usually a large hotel. In honour of the graduating class, the Southbank High School Proml is attended by parents and students as well as faculty, alumni and other friends of the School. The Prom is a semi-formal dinner-dance with music provided by a live band. It is organised by a committee consisting of the Student Council and the Deputy Principal (Pastoral). They begin meeting early in the School year to select a venue and band, to plan a menu and decorations, and to manage publicity and ticket sales.
Social Events & Dances
From time to time the Student Council may organise special activities for students.
