Authors visit Southbank Westminster

13 October 2008

Every year during the second week of October Southbank Westminster hosts National Children's Book Week. Highly regarded authors and poets are invited along to entertain and show their published works. In the last decade two authors, Anne Fine and Michael Rosen, who both went on to become Children's Laureates in the UK, have been invited to the school.

This year during National Poetry Day October 9, the poet Roger Stevens visited to read extracts from his amusing volumes, Why Otters Don't Wear Socks, The Monster Who Ate the Universe and Danny Chaucer, Poet. He also spent time with Southbank's Creative Writing group, giving instruction on editing poetry.

The next day, Marcus Sedgwick spoke to all students about his latest book Blood Red, Snow White, and Kiss of Death and My Swordhand is Singing.

"Both of the guest writers created a huge impression and were instrumental in giving information about the craft and joy of writing as well as the  discoveries along the way," explained Ian Herne, Chief Librarian. "Our students asked reams of questions and were well rewarded with positive author responses to them. Many of the books were purchased for the libraries and are still selling in school after the event."
