Construction & Structures
01 October 2008Grade 4 students at Southbank Hampstead have participated in two exciting workshops related to their current Unit of Inquiry, Construction and Structures.
A morning workshop entitled Bridges, Math & Design involved students working with wood to investigate the strength of different shapes, including triangles, squares and rectangles. They used this knowledge to help them build truss bridges, which had to stand off the ground without being held up.
The afternoon workshop, entitled ‘Big Structures', saw students challenged to use building materials to construct a 3D figure of an athlete. They were required to use their knowledge of strong shapes to ensure their figure would stand.
"During this unit, we are focusing on the PYP attitudes of Co-operation and Creativity. While working in groups, the students had to use their social skills in order to complete complex tasks that required creative thinking skills. The workshop was an exciting learning experience enjoyed by everyone!" explained Grade 4 teachers Alexandra Gordon and Robyn Turner.
