Grade 4 Investigates Beliefs
01 December 2008The Hampstead Grade 4's recent Unit of Inquiry was Beliefs.
The students considered how beliefs and values influence who we are, how people with different beliefs and values influence who we are, how people with different beliefs and values live and work together, and the beliefs and values that are the foundations of some of the world's religions.
Several field trips were planned to connect the in-class discussions with the real world - visits to: St. Paul's Cathedral to participate in a workshop about Christian values and beliefs, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Skih Temple in Hounslow, the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in Neasden, and the Buddhapadipa Buddhist Temple in Wimbledon.
Teacher Robyn Turner said: "The students showed tremendous respect during the visits. We were very impressed with the thoughtful and informed questions that they asked. They displayed excellent inquiry skills."
Visiting speakers were also arranged in school and parents came in to speak about their religious beliefs.
Every Unit of Inquiry encourages development of several of the PYP Learner Profiles. This unit particularly encouraged the students to be open-minded, risk-takers and balanced, with a focus on the PYP attitudes of confidence, respect and tolerance. Families were asked to discuss these profiles and attitudes at home to consolidate the learning.
