How Does the World Work?

30 January 2009

Kensington Grade 3 students are currently working on their Unit of Inquiry: How the World Works.

Looking at the central idea - natural forces cause the Earth's geological features to constantly change - the group will be inquiring into:
1. Geological features of the Earth
2. How natural constructive and destructive forces change the Earth
3. Evidence the Earth has changed and is continuing to change

The students will be given numerous opportunities to use their thinking, self-management, speaking and research skills. They will choose one specific force or landform to research independently and will also create before and after models of a chosen landform using clay. These models will be based on the information gathered in their inquiry and will illustrate natural changes to the Earth's geological features.

The class will then organise a museum to display and discuss their learning and understanding with parents.

As an introduction to the inquiry, the group visited the Natural History Museum to find out about rocks, constructive and destructive forces and geological features of the earth.

Because of the scientific nature of this unit, it will include many hands-on science experiments and experiences and so in February, the group will visit the science labs at Southbank Westminster to participate in science experiments conducted by Southbank's Head of Science and Middle Years Programe Co-ordinator, Lori Fritz.
