Kensington Charity
28 January 2009Southbank's Mission Statement makes clear the objective that our students should develop a life-long commitment of service to others. The International Baccalaureate programmes support this vision of action and service, which comes in many forms - from the simplest act of kindness among friends to concerted efforts of individuals and groups to take action as a result of understanding.
One aspect of this commitment is the support our community provides to charities. We want to ensure that the students could relate to and, where possible, engage in the charities that we were supporting locally, nationally and internationally.
This year, Southbank Kensington's efforts will be focused on: Suzuki in Schools Programme, which enables children who do not have the means to do so, to participate in Suzuki music lessons; Kensington Nursing Home, which is a residendial home for elderly people near school; Honeypot, which provides respite for children who have the responsibility of caring for a parent; Hambantota, Sri Lanka, where we sponsor 55 children who were orphaned in the Tsunami, allowing them to live with family and continue their education.
Last term, the PTA helped raise over £900 for the orphans in Sri Lanka by selling school tea towels. This term, we are turning our attention to Honeypot. We held a Spirit Day (designed to lift spirits in the dark days of winter, raise awareness and funds for the Honeypot charity and have some fun!). The whole school dressed up in bee-inspired yellow and black, donating £1 to do so. Mr Bumble (a giant fluffy bee) also visited the children to explain the work of the charity.
We hope we have raised a honeypot full of money for the organisation! For more information about this charity, please visit www.honeypot.co.uk
