Learning about Relationships
09 April 2008"Feeling angry is like a volcano about to erupt", "Feeling jealous is like an elephant stamping its feet", "Feeling sad is like there is a monster inside you". These are some of the ways that Hampstead's Grade 1 have been describing feelings as part of their Relationships Unit on Inquiry.
The students have been exploring questions such as: what are feelings? What is a relationship? How do our feelings control our actions? How do we solve problems in relationships?
They have read stories and talked about the feelings of the characters, working in pairs to perform role-plays and to discuss feelings. They also talked about the relationships between characters in fairytales and wrote letters to characters such as Goldilocks to tell them what they thought about their actions and how to improve their relationships.
When The Freshwaterhouse Theatre Company visited the school to perform The Prince and the Pauper, the children helped tell the story by dressing up, performing actions and calling out. Through this story, they learnt how kindness and honesty are important qualities in relationships.
In Mathematics, the pupils have been studying the relationships between numbers, such as place value and doubles.
