Polar Bear In Trafalgar Square

The EAL classes from Grades 1 to 5 at Southbank Hampstead went to Trafalgar Square to see the sculpture of the ice polar bear at the end of term.

EAL teacher Anita Bamberger explained: "Before the trip the children read an article explaining the importance of this bear. When people touch it they will melt it. This act is symbolic of the way humans have the power to affect the balance of nature and have an impact on climate change. The children were excited to touch it and were particularly interested in seeing the metal skeleton that was starting to reveal itself as the ice melted."

The life-size polar bear is the biggest ice sculpture ever to have been made in England. It was there from December 11 and should take 10 days to melt, although with the cold spell we are having now it might last longer!

The students also saw the large Christmas tree that Norway gives to London as a gift every year and the famous statues in Trafalgar Square. Then they had their snacks in the warmth of the National Gallery.
