Sense of Community
10 April 2008Kensington Grade 2 students have been investigating the local community of Notting Hill and Notting Hill Gate.
As part of their Sense of Community unit, the children heightened their awareness of different communities and how they are organised. By investigating the local community around the school the children were able to see organisational features first hand and learn about how these help to instil a sense of community.
PC Burchell visited the school to talk about the role of the police in the local community and the children asked thoughtful questions using the knowledge they had gained from the unit.
The children also thought about their class as a community, allowing them to reflect upon their own interactions and the effect of these on the class as a whole.
Their next unit of inquiry is entitled Culture Vultures and the children will be learning about culture to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of themselves and others. The Learner profile attributes: Open-Minded and Reflective will be particularly exercised in this unit.
