Skulls, Sugar and Dalí: cultural activity at the Mexican Embassy

14 November 2011

On November 2, Grades 9-12 students of Spanish enjoyed a private event at the Mexican Embassy consisting of a presentation about the traditional "Day of the Dead". The "Day of the Dead" is a Mexican tradition which is also observed in other Spanish speaking countries in a variety of ways. It was a unique opportunity for Southbank students to experience and learn more about the culture of the language they are studying.

The group learned about the syncretism of this festival that reflects elements from the rich roots of the Mexican culture. This year the installations at the "Altares" had a more experimental touch as they were dedicated to the surrealist artists Leonora Carrington y Edward James. Some artwork and personal objects from them and other surrealist artists, such as Dalí's "mouth couch" were also in display. The students left with a special souvenir from the visit - a skull-shaped Mexican candy.
