Solutions For Our Planet

12 March 2008

Grade 5 Hampstead pupils spent an exciting four days at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales.

The Centre in Powys offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. It also demonstrates practical ways of addressing these problems with ideas such as renewable energy, environmental building, energy efficiency, organic growing and alternative sewage systems.

The trip was linked to the Sustainable Energy unit of inquiry and the problem solving and problem posing will prepare the students for their Grade 5 exhibition in May.

The group slept in the centre's eco-cabins that are largely run by renewable sources such as wind and solar power. During the day they participated in activities such as a wind power workshop, hikes, a global warming presentation, CO2 games and a rope course.

"We had a fantastic time and learned a lot about the future of renewable energy," said one of the students. "My most memorable moment was seeing the wind turbines up close."
