Southbank World Summit

09 January 2009

A Southbank World Summit is a formal debate based on those at the Model United Nations.

Students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 are randomly grouped together in delegations. The delegations represent a country or an interest group and the students must research and then represent the views of this country or group in the debate.

This year, the following topics were debated:
Resolution 1: The question of the role and safety of journalists
Resolution 2: The question of an international code of conduct for journalists

Students prepared a minute-long opening speech setting out their point of view on the two resolutions. A full debate then followed. After lunch, voting took place.

The countries and groups represented in this debate were: Associated Press, Mediawatch UK, Global Investigative Journalism Network , Committee to Protect Journalists, International Federation of Journalists, Celebrities International, International News Safety Institute, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bosnia & Herzogovenia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mozambique, Netherlands, Denmark, Pakistan, Peru, Russian Federation, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Representative of tabloid publishers, UK, USA, UAE, Zimbabwe, Iran, Saudia Arabia, North Korea, Sweden, Georgia, Columbia and Representative of free newspaper distributors.
