Spanish Shopping
26 November 2008Grade 3 Kensington students visited the Spanish supermarket García in Portobello Road this week.
Linking with the current Unit of Inquiry Goods and Services, students learned about the process of importing goods from Spain. The experience of buying food helped them to understand the importance that such a service can have for the Spanish community in London in connecting with their own culture. They also learned the role García plays in helping people from other countries learn about Spain and the flavours of Spain.
"The students were very excited and did an excellent job practising the dialogues learned in class to purchase food in Spanish. At the end of the shopping they were very proud of themselves for being able to start interacting in Spanish independently," explained Spanish teacher Carmen Martin.
In the following Spanish lesson back at school, the students pretended to be in a restaurant where they had to order the food they preferred, using the dialogues learned and finally they ate all the goodies they had purchased!
"The whole experience provided an authentic context for applying what the children had learned in Spanish, making it a valuable, meaningful and memorable learning experience which was enjoyed by all," added Spanish teachers Elena Chacón and Mariola Mazuelas.
