Student To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
09 July 2009Grade 11 student Emily Hyland has been awarded this year's Janet Kuehn Travel Award at Southbank Westminster.
The award was established in memory of Janet Kuehn, a much-loved teacher who had been with Southbank from its foundation. She died in October 1998 following a courageous battle against cancer. The travel fellowship is presented annually to a Southbank Westminster student who demonstrates qualities that were admired in Janet:
• Courage and strength as an individual
• Warmth and sensitivity
• Generosity
• High academic and personal standards
• Commitment to improving understanding among people.
Nominated students are invited to submit and present educational travel proposals. The committee considers the proposals and the successful candidate is awarded a travel scholarship of £1500.
Emily fought off competition from a particularly strong field this year - all the proposals were outstanding. She plans to climb Kilimanjaro raising money for the Msamaria Street Children Centre in Moshi.
