Westminster students enjoy Discovery Week

Westminster students, Grades 6-11, have recently returned from a range of exciting and fun Discovery Week residential trips, when students and their teachers left London to explore places and interests beyond the classroom and got to know each other better in a beautiful setting.  Students took part in challenging activities under the supervision of specialist instructors.  Debriefing sessions followed each activity and students were encouraged to assess their own progress.  The emphasis throughout the week was on developing skills in teamwork, co-operation, initiative, problem solving and decision making.

The accompanying teachers commented: “The students were absolutely great: they challenged themselves, were polite and respectful and a credit to the school. It was a pleasure to be there with them. Well done everyone!”

Rafting, Jacob’s Ladder, mountain biking, climbing, hiking and a beach Walk – these are just a few of the activities that Grade 6 took part in during their September Discovery Week in Osmington Bay, Dorset.  Highlights included George’s fabulous game of Ambush; tackling spiders in the cabins, hiking with cows in the meadow and the amazing game of ‘cluedo’ on the last night.   It was four days of breaking the ice, team work,  risk taking  and most of all… having fun!

Grade 7 spent their Discovery week on the island of Jersey. The students experienced a number of exciting water sports on Jersey’s beautiful beaches, including surfing, kayaking, beach games and paddle boarding. The students enjoyed four days with great weather and completed a number of advisory challenges including a quiz night and ten pin bowling.

Grade 8 students spent the Discovery Week at the lovely mansion house, PGL centre, Beam House. Situated in the middle of the Devonshire countryside, a short drive from the coast, it is one of the smaller centres and therefore created a nice intimate atmosphere. Students enjoyed home-cooked food and experienced a variety of outdoor activities, including High Ropes, Trapeze and surfing and body boarding.  They also visited the market town of Barnstable to get a feel of the locality and the history of the county.

Grade 9 visited Moorland Hall, next to Dartmoor in the beautiful county of Devon. They undertook many challenging tasks and activities that included Mountain biking, horse riding, gorge walking orienteering, team challenges and many more. Highlight of the week had to be completing ‘Mars Bar Hill’ in the bike ride! It was an excellent fun filled, action packed start to the year.

Grade 10 were in the water a lot as they visited the Ullswater Centre, Cumbria! Additionally students enjoyed mountain biking and ‘The Tunnels’, tiny pipes to crawl through, made to simulate pot holing.

The Grade 11 Discovery Week was to Battisborough House, in the depths of the beautiful Devon countryside, with fantastic views of the nearby estuary and sea.  The students followed a four-day programme of team building activities, First Aid Training including AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillation) resuscitation techniques, self-Defence, Kayaking and environmental work for CAS. The trip finished with a visit to the National Aquarium in Plymouth and a boat trip around Plymouth Harbour from where Sir Francis Drake sailed and from where the Pilgrim Fathers departed to settle in the New World.
