What is eAssessment?
As part of the Grade 10 curriculum, students complete MYP External Assessments (eAssessments) in English, Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary Learning. These external exams act as a formal benchmark, working alongside our internal grading to provide a full and balanced picture of student achievement. The Interdisciplinary Learning assessment is especially valuable, as it challenges students to link ideas from different subjects to solve real-world problems.
Internal grades show a student’s achievement across the whole academic year. eAssessment grades provide an external benchmark based on a formal examination. Together, they give a full and balanced picture of each student’s abilities, strengths and areas of growth.
Why Offer eAssessment?
- External Validation: They provide an official benchmark of academic standards. While universities primarily review internal transcripts, a solid eAssessment score confirms the rigour of the grades achieved.
- University Relevance: Mathematics and English were selected as they are the core competencies most heavily weighed in university admissions globally.
- Real-World Experience: Students gain experience working under formal exam conditions with papers designed externally, adding credibility to their results beyond internal school grading.
- Preparation for the Future: Crucially, they help students build resilience, confidence, and familiarity with timed assessments before entering the rigorous IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP).
How do universities see these results?
For UCAS applications in the United Kingdom, we submit a comprehensive profile including Grade 10 internal grades alongside the specific MYP eAssessment grades achieved. Universities view the eAssessment results similarly to GCSE or IGCSE grades, appreciating the external validation they provide in core subjects. By combining these formal exam results with our internal school grades, we provide admissions officers with a complete evidence base of a student's consistency and ability. International universities similarly value this combination, as it allows them to fairly compare applicants across different education systems.
FAQs...
We offer the MYP External Assessment (eAssessment) in Grade 10 for Mathematics or Extended Mathematics, English Language and Literature and Interdisciplinary Learning.
Each MYP eAssessment is a timed, on-screen examination. The exact length varies by subject, but students can generally expect a traditional exam-style format lasting around 1.5 to 2 hours.
eAssessments are marked externally by the International Baccalaureate (IB). This means: Grades are based on the MYP Global IB criteria. Results provide an objective, internationally recognised benchmark. Internal MYP grades reflect performance across the full academic year, while eAssessment grades reflect performance in a single formal exam at the end of the year. Together, they provide a balanced and accurate representation of each student’s skills, achievements, and areas for growth.
Southbank integrates preparation by: embedding eAssessment-style tasks into lessons, set study time for specific eAssessment preparation and study, peer assessment & providing mock exams using the official IB exam software, so students are confident with the digital format, increasing practice in timed conditions to build resilience and familiarity.
The MYP eAssessments take place in May of Grade 10, the final year of the Middle Years Programme.
