Using AI Responsibly
Grade 10 students recently took part in a conference with Matthew Lovegrove, Digital Learning Advisor from Cognita, exploring how to use artificial intelligence responsibly, ethically and effectively.
The session focused on five key messages:
Be alert to deepfakes. As AI-generated images, videos and voices become more realistic, students were encouraged to look for warning signs such as visual glitches, unnatural speech patterns or urgent requests involving money or personal data. Always verify through trusted contacts and report concerns to the school.
Use AI ethically. Creating deepfakes or harmful content is never acceptable. AI should be used to support learning, not to deceive or harm others.
Think critically. AI can make mistakes or “hallucinate” information. Students were advised to question sources, check evidence, compare tools and ask for alternative viewpoints rather than accepting the first response.
Maintain academic integrity. Using AI to complete assignments independently is equivalent to plagiarism. Students were reminded to use AI as a thought partner for ideas and structure, while ensuring all submitted work remains their own.
Protect your digital footprint. AI platforms learn from user inputs. Students were encouraged to think carefully before uploading personal information and to consider whether they would be comfortable with their content becoming public.
The overall message was clear: AI can be a powerful tool for good, but only when used thoughtfully, ethically and responsibly. Crucially, students were reminded that their teachers remain their best advisers. Open conversations, honesty and guidance from trusted educators will always be more valuable than shortcuts, and will ultimately lead to deeper learning and long-term success.
This event aligns with the ongoing series of AI literacy sessions and workshops being delivered to our Grades 9-12 students.
